Question

Discuss the drawbacks of Rutherford’s atomic model. [2 Marks]

Open in App
Solution

As per Rutherford’s atomic model, electrons revolve around the nucleus in circular orbits. But this orbital revolution of electrons is not stable as the revolving electrons in the orbits will undergo acceleration and emit energy. [1 Mark]

This will result in the loss of energy of electrons, and they will ultimately fall into the nucleus. Hence, Rutherford’s atomic model does not explain the stability of an atom. [1 Mark]
