• Fishing is an important occupation in Tamil Nadu because of the presence of 1076 kilometres long coastline.
• There are two types of fishing -
  • Marine fishing: It is carried out a few miles away from the shore in the sea, using large mechanised boats.
  • Inland fishing: It is carried out in lakes, rivers, ponds, swamps and backwaters.
• The fishing sector contributes close to 1.25% to the state’s economy and ranks fourth in fish production in India.
