Who is the Chief Minister?
  • The Chief Minister is the ‘real head’ of the State Executive.
  • All major decisions about policies and welfare schemes in the state are taken by the Chief Minister.
  • The Chief Minister selects the Council of Ministers at the state level. These Ministers help them with the administration of the state.
Functions of the Chief Minister:
  • They act as a link between the Governor and Council of Ministers and inform the Governor about policy-related decisions.
  • They recommend names to the Governor, for appointments to major official posts in the state.
  • Governor can summon or prorogue an Assembly session based on the recommendation of the Chief Minister and the Council of ministers.
  • They can also recommend the dissolution of the Legislative Assembly to the Governor.
  • They are also expected to maintain a friendly and warm relationship with the Union Government.
