Solution: The Marathas were powerful rulers who rose to prominence in the 17th century CE. The Maratha kingdom was the important centre of power in western India. The Vindhya-Satpura mountain ranges and the Narmada-Tapti rivers served as natural barriers against the enemies. Moreover, the Marathas were unified by the rich Marathi language and literature. They also had a strong army and navy which helped them in becoming a strong political power in this region.
