Question

Discuss the properties of solids, liquids and gases in terms of:

iv. Volume

Open in App
Solution

Volume:

  • In solids, the molecules are closely packed and the intermolecular forces are very strong. Therefore, solids have a definite shape.
  • The molecules in liquids are not so closely packed and the intermolecular forces are relatively weak. Therefore, Liquids have a definite volume but do not have a definite shape. They take the shape of the container
  • The molecules in the gaseous state are free to move around and the intermolecular forces are negligible. Therefore, gases don't have a definite volume.
