Question

Discuss the properties of solids, liquids and gases in terms of:

Packing

Open in App
Solution

packing:

  • In the case of solid substances where the molecules are tightly packed, the intermolecular forces are very strong. The space between molecules is very less. Therefore, the molecules can have very little movement.
  • In the case of liquid substances where the molecules are not so tightly packed, the intermolecular forces are relatively weak. As a result, the space between them is comparatively more.
  • Therefore, the molecules move to a small extent as compared to solids, but have less movement as compared to gases.
  • In the case of gas substances, the intermolecular force of attraction is very weak, thus the molecules have a greater amount of freedom.
