Question

Discuss the properties of solids, liquids and gases in terms of:

vii. Ability to flow.

Open in App
Solution

Ability to flow:

  • In solids, the molecules are tightly packed. The intermolecular forces are so strong that the molecules do not have free movement. Hence, solids do not flow.
  • The molecules in liquids have relatively more movement. Intermolecular forces are strong enough to hold them together, but not strong enough to prevent the liquid from flowing. Therefore, liquids can flow easily.
  • The molecules in the gaseous state have free, random movement. The molecules move about very fast. They overcome the intermolecular forces of attraction. Therefore, gases flow easily in all directions and keep expanding till all available space is filled.
