Chemistry - The branch of science that deals with the study of properties and changes in matter is called chemistry.

Chemistry plays the following role in the field of agriculture-

  • Fertilisers – the introduction of artificial fertilisers has revolutionised the production and yield of crops by providing the necessary nutrients for the growth of plants.
  • Pesticides – these are the chemicals that kill the insects and other pests that harm the crop and affect the yield.
  • Weedicides – these chemicals kill the unwanted plants (weeds) that grow with crops.
  • Preservatives – these chemicals are added to grains and seeds to prevent insects and rats' infestation that destroys the stored grains.
