Chief Election Commissioner:

a. The President of India appoints the Chief Election Commission (CEC).After the appointment, the CEC is neither answerable to the government nor the President.
b. He is appointed for the period of 6 years or upto 65 years.
c. He can be removed by the parliament on grounds of misconduct by 2/3 rd voting by both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
d. He is the most important and generally the senior most officer in the Election commission.
e. Important dates pertaining to elections are made by him.

f.The CEC has the power of punishing those candidates/parties who violate the Model Code of Conduct.

g. During elections, the CEC sets guidelines for the government, so that government does not misuses its powers.

h.The government officials, who are on election duty, work under the CEC and not the government.
