A fishery may refer to the business of producing or collecting fish and other aquatic life or the location where such an operation is conducted. Both in freshwater bodies (approximately 10% of the total catch) and the oceans (about 90% of the total catch), commercial fisheries comprise wild fisheries and fish farms.
The fishery is a sector of the economy that focuses on capturing, processing, and selling edible aquatic species such as edible prawns, crab, lobster, oysters, etc.
Due to the significance of fisheries to economies and societies, they are subject to elaborate regulatory systems and management techniques that vary greatly across nations. Fisheries have traditionally been managed on a "first-come, first-served" basis, but new challenges from overfishing by humans and environmental concerns have necessitated increasing management of fisheries in order to reduce conflict and boost beneficial business growth in the fishery. Modern fisheries management is often governed by a combination of international laws and local regulations.
