Female reproductive system:
The female reproductive system consists of a pair of ovaries, a pair of oviducts, a uterus, cervix, and vagina.
Ovaries:
Ovaries are the pair of oval structures that are present on either side of the female reproductive system which releases an egg each month.
Oviduct or fallopian tube:
Oviducts or fallopian tubes are paired tubes lying on either side and are generally about 12 cm in length.
At the ovarian end, the tube is funnel-shaped having finger-like projections which help in the collection of the eggs.
The fallopian tube is the site for fertilization (fusion of male and female gamete).
Uterus:
The uterus is a pear-shaped structure that is broader at the upper end and narrower at the lower end, this is the place where implantation takes place.
It nourishes the embryo and bears it until birth.
Cervix:
The cervix is present at the base of the uterus and connects with the vagina.
Vagina:
It is about a 9 cm long tube that allows entry of sperm after copulation.
It is covered with a thin membrane in called hymen which can break due to heavy exercise and other activities.
