Solution

Female reproductive system:

  1. The female reproductive system consists of a pair of ovaries, a pair of oviducts, a uterus, cervix, and vagina.
  2. Ovaries:
    • Ovaries are the pair of oval structures that are present on either side of the female reproductive system which releases an egg each month.
  3. Oviduct or fallopian tube:
    • Oviducts or fallopian tubes are paired tubes lying on either side and are generally about 12 cm in length.
    • At the ovarian end, the tube is funnel-shaped having finger-like projections which help in the collection of the eggs.
    • The fallopian tube is the site for fertilization (fusion of male and female gamete).
  4. Uterus:
    • The uterus is a pear-shaped structure that is broader at the upper end and narrower at the lower end, this is the place where implantation takes place.
    • It nourishes the embryo and bears it until birth.
  5. Cervix:
    • The cervix is present at the base of the uterus and connects with the vagina.
  6. Vagina:
    • It is about a 9 cm long tube that allows entry of sperm after copulation.
    • It is covered with a thin membrane in called hymen which can break due to heavy exercise and other activities.
