Discuss the types of reproduction in Kingdom Mycota with examples

Open in App
Solution

  • Kingdom Mycota includes fungi. Reproduction in Fungi can be:-
1) Vegetative reproduction:-
a) Fragmentation- Mycelium may break accidentally or due to decay into 2 or more parts.
  • Each parts develops into complete mycelium.
  • Eg- mushrooms.
b) Budding- Fungus protrudes out at one end.
  • The protrusion grows out into a bud and gets separated to form new individual.
  • Eg- yeast.
c) Fission- It occurs in unicellular forms where cell divides to produce 2 daughter cells.
  • Eg- yeast.
2) Asexual reproduction:-
  • Endogenous:- These spores are formed internally within sac by the division of protoplasm.
  • E.g. Sporangiospores.
i) Sporangiospores:- A motile spore produced in a sac or sporangium and are unicellular.
  • These spores are liberated by breaking the wall of sporangium.
ii) Aplanospore: A non motile spore produced in the sporangium is knows as Aplanospore.
b. Exogenous:- These spores are borne externally on sporophores.
  • E. g. Conidia, Oidia.
i) Conidia:- These spores are produced on sepecialized hyphae or stock. i.e. conidiphore.
  • Conidia may be uni or multicellular.
  • E.g. Alternaria, Helminthosporium
ii) Oidia:- They are produced asexually in chains on the stalk called as oidiophore.
  • E.g. Oidia in powdery mildew.
3) Sexual reproduction:-
i) Oospores:
  • It is the result of union between female gametes i.e. Oogonium and male gametes i.e. Antheridium.
  • These spores can resist the adverse conditions.
  • E.g. Fungi of sub-division Mastigomycotian.
ii) Ascospores:
  • It is a result of union between female gametes. I.e. Ascogonium and male gamete. i.e. Antheridium.
  • E.g. Fungi of sub-division Ascomycotina.
iii) Basidiospores:
  • These are the sexual spores produced on club shaped structure known as basidium.
  • E.g. Fungi of sub-division Basidiomycotina.
