Question

Discuss the various factors upon which the rate of evaporation depends.

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: Evaporation:

  • Evaporation is the process by which water is converted to water vapor at room temperature.
  • The factors that affect evaporation are temperature, surface area, humidity, and wind speed.

Part 2: Factors affecting Evaporation

Effect of temperature:

Temperature and evaporation are directly proportional, i.e, as surface area increases, evaporation also increases.

Effect of surface area:

The rate of evaporation can be increased by increasing surface area.

Effect of humidity:

Humidity and evaporation are inversely proportional, i.e, as humidity increases, the rate of evaporation decreases.

Effect of wind speed:

As the wind speed increases, the rate of evaporation also increases.
