Question

Discuss two useful applications of the greenhouse effect.

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: Greenhouse effect

  • Greenhouse effect: The increase in the temperature of the earth by trapping the radiation from the sun by the greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and water vapours in the atmosphere.
  • The greenhouse effect happens because of greenhouse gases, which includes carbon dioxide, methane, water vapor & other.

Part 2: Two useful applications of the greenhouse effect:

1. Growing vegetables and flowers in snow-covered areas: Sheds with glass walls are constructed to allow shorter wavelengths of solar heat radiation to pass into the shed while preventing longer wavelengths from passing out at night. This helps to keep the shed warm enough for flowers and veggies to grow.

2. Use of glass to keep homes warm: In cold regions, glass windows and doors allow shorter wavelength solar energy heat radiations to pass into rooms but not longer wavelength heat radiations to pass out. As a result, the greenhouse effect occurs, and rooms remain relatively warm.
