In Pteridophytes, the annulus and the stomium help in the dehiscence of the sporangium and dispersal of spores. Stomium is a thin row of cells on one side of capsule, which marks the line of dehiscence. At maturity the sporangium dehisces by drying action, which exerts pressure on mouth assisted by shrinkage of annulus. Lastly mouth of sporangium open and the spores are liberated.
