Solution

The correct option is B False

Distillation

  • Distillation is the process of separating a liquid from its solution by evaporating it and then condensing its vapor.
  • The process is carried out in a specially designed apparatus called the distillation flask.
  • A solution is heated in the distillation flask due to which the liquid component gets evaporated, leaving the solid component behind.
  • The vapor of the liquid pass through a tube called the condenser.
  • The condenser is kept cool so that vapor can cool down.
  • Finally, the vapor is collected in a receiving flask. This way, we get pure liquid from its solution.
  • The distilled water that is used by doctors, chemists and pharmaceutical industries is obtained by distillation.

Separating funnel

  • Immiscible liquids can be separated using a separating funnel.
  • The heavier liquid of the two immiscible liquids forms the lower layer and the lighter liquid forms the top layer.
  • A mixture of mustard oil and water can be separated using a separating funnel.
  • The mixture is placed in a separating funnel and is allowed to stand for some time.
  • Two layers of the components are observed.
  • The lighter liquid (oil) forms the top layer and water being heavier forms the lower layer.
  • The heavier liquid comes out first on opening the stopper of the funnel and is collected in a container.
  • The stopper of the funnel is closed once the lower layer is transferred completely.
  • The lighter liquid remains in the separating funnel.
  • This method can be used to separate mixtures of oil and water, petrol and water, and carbon tetrachloride and water.

Hence, Distilled water can not be obtained from tap water by using a separating funnel.
