Criteria for National party:​
  • A party must secure 6% of the vote in four or more states in the earlier Lok Sabha or state assembly elections.​
  • They should have at least four seats in the last Lok Sabha polls from any state or states.​
  • A party could get national party status even if it secured 2% of all Lok Sabha seats in the last election.​
  • Example: Bharatiya Janta Party, Indian National Congress and more.​
Criteria for Regional party:​
  • ​A party must secure at least two seats in state assembly as well as 6% vote share in the last assembly election in the state.​
  • ​Or they should have at least one seat in Lok Sabha as well as 6% vote share in the last Lok Sabha election in the state.​
  • ​Example: Shivsena, AAP and more.
