Sigma bond Pi bond
It is formed by the head on overlapping of orbitals (along the bonding axis). It is formed by the sidewise overlapping of orbitals (above and below the bonding axis).
It is denoted by the symbol σ. It is denoted by the symbol π.
It is a strong covalent bond as compared to pi bond. It is a weak covalent bond.
When 2 atoms interact, only 1 sigma bond formation is possible. When 2 atoms interact, 1 or more pi bonds can be formed.
