On adding ammonium hydroxide solution to ferrous salt and ferric salt, the following reactions will take place.

Ferrous salt Gelatinous green precipitate produced Gelatinous green precipitate is insoluble in NH₄OH
Ferric salt Brown precipitate produced Brown precipitate is insoluble in NH₄OH
