Question

Distinguish by adding: Sodium hydroxide solution and ammonium hydroxide solution to
(b) Lead salt solution and zinc salt solution.

Open in App
Solution

  • Sodium hydroxide on reaction with zinc salt gives a white gelatinous precipitate Zn(OH)2 which is soluble in excess of NaOH, while with lead salt solution it gives chalky white precipitate Pb(OH)2 which is soluble in excess of NaOH so these two cannot be distinguished by NaOH alone.
  • Ammonium hydroxide on reaction with lead salt gives chalky white precipitate Pb(OH)2 which is insoluble, but on reaction with zinc salt gives a white gelatinous precipitate Zn(OH)2 which is soluble in excess of NH4OH.

Pb(NO3)2+2NH4OHPb(OH)2+2NH4NO3
(colourless) (chalky white ppt.)

ZnSO4+2NH4OHZn(OH)2+2(NH4)2SO4
(colourless) (gelatinous white ppt.)
