Question

Distinguish by adding: Sodium hydroxide solution and ammonium hydroxide solution to Calcium salt solution and lead salt solution

Open in App
Solution

  • Sodium hydroxide on reaction with calcium salt gives a milky white precipitate Ca(OH)2 which is sparingly soluble, while with lead salt solution it gives chalky white precipitate Pb(OH)2 which is soluble in excess of NaOH.
Ca(NO3)2+2NaOHCa(OH)2+2NaNO3
(colourless) (milky white ppt.)

Pb(NO3)2+2NaOHPb(OH)2+2NaNO3
(colourless) (chalky white ppt.)

Ammonium hydroxide on reaction with lead salt gives chalky white precipitate Pb(OH)2 which is insoluble, but with calcium salts no precipitation occurs even in excess of NH4OH.

Pb(NO3)2+2NH4OHPb(OH)2+2NH4NO3
(colourless) (chalky white ppt.)
