Question

Do all atoms have the same number of electrons and protons?

Open in App
Solution

For a given element, all the atoms will have the same number of electrons and protons till the given atom is in its neutral state. If the atom of any element is charged, then it differs in the number of electrons from other atoms which are neutral.

Atomicnumber=Numberofelectron=Numberofprotons

  1. For different elements, there are different number of electrons and protons present. Although, it can be possible that two different elements, with different charges result in the same number of electrons.
  2. For example Sodium Na has 11 electrons and 11 protons. But Na+ion has 10 electrons, 11 protons. Similarly,
  3. Al+3 also has 10 electrons but it has 13 protons compared to neutral aluminum that has 13 electrons and 13 protons
