Question

Do all cells use oxygen to produce energy?

Open in App
Solution

Not all cell require oxygen to produce energy always. As for example, yeasts are anaerobes i.e they do not need oxygen for respiration. They utilise the sugars in absence of oxygen and convert it into alcohol with the release of energy. Then they utilise this energy for survival. This is called anaerobic respiration.

There are two types of respiration, aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration.

Aerobic Respiration

  • In the presence of oxygen
  • Occurs in the mitochondria (of the cell)
  • Produces a large amount of energy

Anaerobic Respiration

  • Does not require oxygen
  • Occurs in the cytoplasm (of the cell)
  • Produces a small amount of energy
