Question

Do bacteria have circular chromosomes?

Open in App
Solution

Prokaryotes:

  1. Prokaryotes do not have well-developed cell organelles, they have primitive bodies that govern the cellular functions of prokaryotic organisms.
  2. Bacteria do not have a well-developed nucleus that contains their genetic material.
  3. Rather they have circular chromosomal DNA that is their genetic material.
  4. The circular chromosome is the actual genome of prokaryotic organisms which is present in circular form.
  5. They also have extra-chromosomal circular DNA (called a plasmid) that protects them from the attack of the phage virus.
