Question

Do bacteria have cytochrome C?

Open in App
Solution

Cytochrome C:

  1. Cytochrome C protein is present usually in the inner mitochondrial membrane.
  2. It is a hemoprotein that is associated with an iron (Fe) cofactor.
  3. They play a major role in cellular respiration specifically in the electron transport system (ETS) and also in programmed cell death (apoptosis).

Bacteria:

  1. These are simple unicellular organisms that lack a well-defined nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles.
  2. Bacteria and archaea belong to prokaryotes.
  3. Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Lactobacillus, etc are some examples of bacteria.
  4. Cytochrome C can be found in numerous bacteria like Saccharomyces cerevisiae or Neurospora crassa.
  5. Bacteria lack mitochondria so cytochrome C is instead present in the periplasmic space outside the plasma membrane.
  6. It plays a similar role in cellular respiration in bacteria.
