Question

Do bacteria have endoplasmic reticulum?

Open in App
Solution

Endoplasmic reticulum:

  1. It is a tubular membrane-bound structure present in the cytoplasm of a eukaryotic cell.
  2. They may have ribosomes attached to the surface called the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) or ribosomes are absent called the smooth endoplasmic reticulum.
  3. These organelles are responsible for the production, folding, and modification of proteins required by the cell.

Bacteria:

  1. These are simple unicellular organisms that lack a well-defined nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles.
  2. Bacteria and archaea belong to prokaryotes.
  3. Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas, Staphylococcus, Lactobacillus, etc are some examples of bacteria.
  4. Bacteria do not have any membrane-bound organelle including the endoplasmic reticulum.
  5. Prokaryotes like bacteria and archaea lack any membrane-bound organelle like ER, Golgi bodies, mitochondria, etc.
