Question

Do blue-green algae die in winter?

Open in App
Solution

Blue-green algae (Cyanobacteria):

  1. Photosynthetic bacteria consist either of single cells or colonies.
  2. They contain only one type of chlorophyll, Chlorophyll (a green pigment), in addition to pigments like carotenoids and phycobilins.
  3. Research shows that a diverse range of cyanobacteria (example- Microcystis) can be found in alpine and polar habitats.
  4. They remain dormant in the winter and become active under suitable growth conditions.
  5. They show a remarkable tolerance toward the abiotic stresses(environmental stress-temperature, salinity, etc.).
  6. Example- Nostoc, Anabaena, etc.
  7. Therefore, blue-green algae do not necessarily die in winters.
