Question

Do C4 plants produce oxygen?

Open in App
Solution

C4 plants and oxygen:

  1. C4 plants are more efficient in producing oxygen than C3 due to high photosynthesis and less photorespiration.
  2. The difference in oxygen production lies mainly in the carbon fixation of C3 plants and C4 plants.
  3. The main enzyme of oxygen fixation is Rubisco.
  4. Rubisco has an affinity for both O2 and CO2 .
  5. When carbon dioxide concentration is low, RuBisCO takes up oxygen to perform photorespiration.
  6. In C4 plants, photorespiration is highly reduced because carbon dioxide concentration is high at the RuBisCO site.
