Question

Do double bonds increase acidity?

Open in App
Solution

Chemical bond:

  1. A chemical bond is a bond between two or more atoms or molecules formed due to sharing or donation of electrons.
  2. When two atoms or molecules share one pair of electrons, they form a single bond.
  3. Molecules having single bonds are sp3 hybridized and they form σ-bonds.
  4. When two atoms or molecules share two pairs of electrons, they form a double bond.
  5. Molecules having double bonds are sp2 hybridized and they form one σ and one π-bond.
  6. The acidic character of bonds can be determined on the basis of hybridization.
  7. More is the s-character in the hybridization higher will be the acidity of a bond.
  8. It can be observed here that double bonds have a higher s-character than a single bond.
  9. Therefore, a double bond being acidic in nature increases the acidity.
