Question

Do gymnosperms have sieve tubes?

Open in App
Solution

Gymnosperms:

Unlike angiosperms, or flowering plants, whose seeds are enclosed by fully developed ovaries, or fruits, gymnosperms, or any vascular plant, reproduce by the use of an exposed seed, or ovule.

Sieve tubes:

  1. These are specialized cells that help the phloem, a highly organized tissue that transports organic molecules produced during photosynthesis, work properly.
  2. Gymnosperms aren't equipped with sieve tubes or companion cells.
  3. In gymnosperms and ferns, the so-called "sieve component" is called a sieve cell.
  4. Despite the fact that both types of sieve components serve the same purpose, gymnosperms (non-flowering vascular plants) have sieve cells while angiosperms have sieve tubes (flowering vascular plants).

Gymnosperms do not have sieve tubes.
