Question

Do insects have a nervous system?

Open in App
Solution

Nervous system:

  1. The control center of your body is your neurological system or Nervous system.
  2. It is controlled by your brain and governs your actions, thoughts, and automatic reactions to your environment.
  3. Additionally, it regulates other bodily functions and systems, including digestion, breathing, and sexual development (puberty).

Nervous system in insects:

  1. Insects' central nervous systems are relatively simple compared to those of most other arthropods.
  2. A dorsal brain is connected to a ventral nerve cord made up of paired segmental ganglia that run along the ventral midline of the thorax and abdomen,
  3. Each segment's ganglia are connected to one another by a brief medial nerve (commissure).
  4. They are also connected to the ganglia of adjacent body segments via intersegmental connectives.
  5. The intersegmental connectives are the rails of the ladder, and commissures are its rungs, giving the central nervous system a general look of a ladder.
  6. Individual ganglia have a propensity to merge (both laterally and longitudinally) into bigger ganglia that service several body segments in more "advanced" insect orders.
