Question

Do metals form neutral oxides ?

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,

Metal oxides are basic in nature. Metals generally form basic oxide but few metals like Aluminium and zinc forms amphoteric oxide.

An amphoteric oxide is an oxide which reacts which both acids and bases. r.

Zinc and aluminium are metals but their oxides, ZnO and Al 2 O 3 are amphoteric oxides as they react with both acids and bases.

Al 2 O 3 + 6HCl → 2AlCl 3 + 3H 2

Al 2 O 3 + 6 NaOH + 3H 2 O → 2Na 3 Al (OH) 6

ZnO + 2HCl → ZnCl 2 + H 2 O

ZnO + 2NaOH + H 2 O → Na 2 [Zn (OH) 4 ]

Metals do not form acidic oxide.
