The nematodes or roundworms constitute the phylum Nematoda with plant-parasitic nematodes also known as eelworms.
Although numerous nematodes infect humans, six spend the majority of their lifecycle in the bowel lumen and are classified as intestinal nematodes.
The symptoms of nematodes in humans include diarrhoea, anaemia, weight loss, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, eosinophilia, tenesmus, rectal prolapse, stunted growth and finger clubbing.
Hence, some of the nematodes live as parasites in the human intestines.
