Question

Do plants need oxygen? If so, what is its source?

Open in App
Solution

Answer: Yes, plants need oxygen for respiration.
  • Plants obtain their oxygen from the surrounding air, the O2 enters the plant body through minute openings present on the leaves called stomata.
  • The diffused O2 is utilised by the plants in breaking down the food material (glucose) into CO2 and subsequently a large amount of energy is released. This released energy is stored in the cells as ATPs (Adenosine triphosphate).
  • The ATPs are used by the plants to carry out all the required life processes like growth, metabolism, reproduction, etc.
