Question

Do plants photosynthesize at night?

Open in App
Solution

Photosynthesis:

  1. Photosynthesis is not performed by plants at night.
  2. Plants can only undergo photosynthesis at night if they are exposed to the appropriate wavelengths of artificial light.
  3. With the help of the chlorophyll pigment, light energy is absorbed.
  4. By the process of photosynthesis, light energy is turned into chemical energy.
  5. The light reaction, also known as the photochemical phase, and the dark reaction, sometimes known as the biosynthetic phase, are the two stages of photosynthesis.
  6. Absorption of light, photolysis of water to liberate oxygen, and production of high-energy intermediates ATP and NADPH are all part of the light reaction.
  7. The Calvin cycle is used to synthesise sugar in the dark reaction which is independent of the light.
  8. Because ATP and NADPH are used in the production of sugar during the dark reaction, it is also indirectly dependent on the light reaction.
