Question

Do plants transpire at night?

Open in App
Solution

Transpiration:

  1. The evaporation of water from plants is known as transpiration.
  2. As much as 99.5% of the water received by a plant's roots is surplus water that transpires out of the plant rather than being used for growth or metabolism.
  3. Maintaining the environment's moisture levels depends heavily on transpiration.
  4. Up to 10% of the moisture in the Earth's atmosphere is caused by plants transpiring water.
  5. In comparison to transpiration that takes place during the daytime when sunlight is present, the rate of transpiration at night is reduced.
  6. This is so because the stomatal opening, which is closed at night, regulates the rate of transpiration.
