Solution

Dear Student,

Root in cross section has a single layer of epidermal cells, some of which protrude to form root hairs. After epidermis, root has several layers of thin-walled parenchymatous cells, with intercellular spaces called cortex. Then come endodermis and pericycle. The thin walled parenchymatous cells are permeable to water movement and minerals and hence take part in absorption of water from the soil.
