A filamentous charophyte green alga of the order Zygnematales by the name of Spirogyra, it is known for its distinctive helical or spiral arrangement of chloroplasts.
Spirogyra is a large genus of freshwater green algae with over 400 species that are typically found growing freely near the edges of big lakes, in shallow ponds, ditches, and among vegetation.
It frequently grows in transient ponds that form during wet weather and then quickly dry up.
Cell walls of spirogyra are composed of cellulose and pectin.
