Question

Do the plants that absorb contaminants such as heavy metals(phytoremediation) lead to biomagnification?

Open in App
Solution

Biomagnification is when the nonbiodegradable substances get progressively accumulate as we move from one ttrophic level to another.Example DDT accumulation in the trophic levels.
Phytoremediation is when plants keep absorbing metals. Some metals like chromium are needed by the body.Fe is another metal which ia very important for the functioning of the body.So these can be utilised by the plant itself for its functioning and if it is eaten by any animal they can be utilised for the functioning of the body.
Biomagnification is when compounds get accumulated in the body due to lack of their disintegration.
So it does not lead to biomagnification.
