Question

Do the strength and concentration of an acid have the same significance?

Open in App
Solution

Strength of an acid:

The strength of an acid is the tendency of that acid to produce H+ ions, the easier it is to produce these ions the stronger is the acid.

The concentration of an acid:

It is the amount of acid present in the solvent, the more the acid the higher the concentration of the solution.

Strength and concentration do not have the same significance as:-

  1. For some acids, the strength is very high even after a lower concentration of the solution. For example, H2SO4 is a strong acid even when its solution is dilute.
  2. For some acids, the strength is low even after high concentrations of their solutions. For example, Acetic Acid(CH3COOH) is a weak acid whatever be its concentration in a solution.

Therefore, the strength and concentration of acid have different significance.
