Substrate level phosphorylation is the process of formation of ATP by the transfer of phosphate groups from a substrate to ADP, rather from ADP and Pi (organic phosphate).

Substrate level phosphorylation in the TCA cycle:

Conversion of Succinyl CoA to succinic acid is the substrate level phosphorylation that takes place in the TCA cycle.

In this reaction, GTP is formed from GDP and Pi after the removal of CoA from succinyl-CoA
