Yes I think Jaya is a brave, sensitive child with a sense of humour. She knew each part of the city in spite of her young age. When Velu is afraid of crossing the road, she catches his hand and guides him through the traffic. She also knows how to keep out of sight from the police in case they catch her and put her in jail. Seeing Velu hungry she takes him to a place where she knows she can get food. She offered him a banana and the vada and ate only one banana herself because she understood that Velu must have been starving. She even shows him her house and advises him to become a ragpicker so that he can earn some money to feed himself. She even offers him a pair of old shoes without laces and pushes a sack and a stick into his hands. This shows how sensitive she was. She even has a sense of humour which is noticed when she jokes with Velu the first time she meets him at the railway station. She asks him what he was doing at the station and where he had come there to become rich. She also pokes fun at Velu when he was standing in the middle of the road saying that he would be chutney if he stayed there for long. She grins while scaring Velu and telling him to be out of the police’s sight or else he would catch Velu and lock him up in jail. Even when they went to the dumpster to look for food Velu asked if she was going to eat leftovers and she amused herself by asking him if he thought she was a dog. When Velu asks her about her name, she teases him by saying that he was following her for so long without even knowing her name.
