If the characters were located on some chromosomes, then the results could have been entirely different. This was seen by Morgan’s experiments on $Drosophila$. He observed that the phenotype in the $F_1$ generation was in a different ratio than what was observed by Mendel. This happened because the characters were located on the same chromosome.
