Dear Student,
Yes, microbes can be used as a source of energy.
Bacteria such as Methonogenic bacteria is used for the production of biofuels. The dung, wood and food processing wastes, sugarcane bagasse, corn stalks are used to generate the biogas or biofuel. The anaerobic bacteria decompose the organic matter which results in the formation of gases such as methane, carbon dioxide and hydrogen. This biogas produced, then, used as a source of energy.
Applications of biogas or biofuel:
1. Bioethanol is a type of biofuel produced from the corn or sugarcane bagasse. It can be used as a fuel in vehicles.
2. Biogas can be used to generate electricity.
3. It can also be used as a fertilizer and because it is a natural fertilizer it will be harmless to the environment.
4. Biofuels can also be used to generate heat, hence can be used for cooking purposes.
