Cleistogamy is the phenomenon in which the flowers of the plants are closed.Flowers that exhibit cleistogamy are called cleistogamous flowers. In such flowers only self pollination occurs.

Cleistogamy helps in producing pure line breeds as there is no cross pollination that occurs in cleistogamous flowers. Pollination can occur even in the absence of pollinators in the cleistogamous flowers.

Since the cleistogamous flowers promote self pollination, there will be no variation seen in the offsprings.

So, Cleistogamy is both advantageous and disadvantageous in nature.
