Question

Do you think that the alternate splicing of exons may enable a structural gene to code for several iso proteins from one and the same gene? If yes, how? If not, why so?

Solution

Alternative splicing:

Alternative splicing is a process that enables a messenger RNA (mRNA) to direct, synthesis of different protein variants (isoforms) that may have different cellular functions or properties.

Alternative splicing in formation of isoproteins:

The alternate splicing of exons is very specific in nature. It could be either gender specific, developmental stage specific etc. Alternate splicing can lead to encoding of various proteins from a single gene. In the absence of such splicing there is a requirement of a new gene for every protein or isoprotein.
