Continental drift is the one about which geologists thought continents can move over time. Today, the theory of continental drift has been explained by the science of plate tectonics.

Scientist Alfred Wegener gave the theory of continental drift . Wegener explains that the continental landmasses were “drifting” across the Earth, sometimes plowing through oceans and into each other. He called this movement continental drift.

So
There is no firm theory about the same but it is believed that continents does drift from its place which results in formation of various gulfs, places , islands etc
