Question

Does a cyclic chain and a long chain of the same compound make any difference in their properties? Explain.

Open in App
Solution

Dear Student,
The cyclic chain has a higher vander Waal force of attraction and has a higher boiling and melting point.
The compound having aliphatic chain will be more reactive compared to the one having cyclic chain because it would require the breaking of strong cyclic structure which needs more energy.
This means there is immense effect on properties due to the presence of open or cyclic chain.
