Algae:

  1. Algae are undifferentiated, chlorophyll-containing, photosynthetic, nucleus-bearing plants.
  2. In algae, the plant body is thallus (a form without root, stem, or leaves).
  3. They are usually marine or freshwater. Some algae can occur in moist habitats like tree trunks, moist soils, and rocks.
  4. Examples- Marimo, green algae, golden algae, wakame etc.

Reproduction in algae:

  1. Algae show two modes of reproduction- asexual and sexual reproduction.
  2. Sexual reproduction occurs by sex organs.
  3. Sex organs are single-celled gametangia containing sex cells or gametes.
  4. Sexual reproduction can be isogamy, oogamy, and anisogamy.
  5. Asexual reproduction is most abundant in algae.
  6. Asexual reproduction takes place by cell division, fragmentation and a variety of spores- natural spores, monospores, tetraspores, and gemmae.
  7. Spores are easily dispersed by the water current.
